HHH - The Portrait of Hou Hsiao-hsien Sentimental Destinies

A story set among a group of thirty-year-olds - friends and lovers - which grabs them at the moment of their first crisis in life. Sudden illness and the specter of death make everyone aware of their own mortality and fragility. The film was directly inspired by the experiences of Assayas himself, who faced the death of his friends, the victims of AIDS. The action takes place in an environment of people connected with art and literature - writers, publishers, fashion designers. And one of the most important props is the work of Joseph Beyus. Played out over the course of a year, divided into six chapters, led by the characteristic sounds of Ali Farka Touré's guitar, Late August, Early September introduces us to the aura of early autumn. Of course, it is not so much the time of year as the time of life when the gates of youth are irreversibly closed, but the time of first appraisals, disappointments and breakups is coming. Mia Hansen-Løve (Things to Come) makes her debut in this melancholic film, which also stars Virginie Ledoyen, Matthieu Almaric and Jean Balibar, who won the Silver Shell award in San Sebastián.

Olivier Assayas

Born in Paris in 1955, Olivier Assayas is the son of screenwriter Jacques Rémy (whose real name was Raymond Assayas). It was at his father’s side that Olivier took his first steps in the industry while still a teenager. He began making his first short amateur films a little while later. At the same time, he launched his career as a film critic, writing for the famous Cahiers du cinéma. He made his full-length debut with Disorder in 1986. Since then, he has made a number of films that have ensured him a position as one of the most important directors in European cinema. His most acclaimed works include Irma Vep, Something in the Air (an award winner for best screenplay at the Venice Festival) and Clouds of Sils Maria.
